Little Free Library

"Take a book... leave a book."

This Little Free Library branch, founded by Justin Adkins and built by custom woodworker Roy Gibson, is part of a nationwide movement that promotes literacy and strengthens community bonds. The library will be available during opening hours for Gallery 107 except Saturday, September 15. We hope to create a permanent base and location for the little library so that it can be made available to the community around the clock. Contact us if you'd like to help!

Show and Tell / Pecha Kucha @ NAMA

In this series of talks by local residents of all stripes, we introduce a fun format known as "pecha kucha". In this fast-paced format, each presenter gets 20 slides at 20 seconds each to convey their ideas (for a total of six minutes and forty seconds).

Have ideas to share on one of these topics? Let us know! Curious? Then pick a night to join us for a rapid exchange of ideas and dreams.

"Invisible North Adams"

  August 30, 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm

In rapid-fire, "pecha kucha" fashion, local community members uncover views of North Adams that don't always meet the eye, from infrastructure to public safety, the economy, social services, and the natural environment.

"I Get Around"

  September 6, 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

How do you get around North Adams? How would you like to? In this fast-paced session, see the city anew through the eyes of the highway department, BRTA, and neighbors who commute on four wheels, two wheels, or even two feet.

"Our Place"

  September 13, 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Do you have a vision of what North Adams could be? Whether it's your own favorite corner of the city or an idea of the city as a whole, share your notions and let us see what you see.

Strong Towns "Curbside Chat"

Join Charles Marohn, director of the nationwide organization, Strong Towns, for a candid talk about the future of America's cities, towns and neighborhoods.

The Curbside Chat is a presentation, followed by a community-specific discussion, about the financial health of our places.

  • Why are our cities and towns so short of resources despite decades of robust growth?
  • Why do we struggle at the local level just to maintain our basic infrastructure?
  • What do we do now that the economy has changed so dramatically?

The answers lie in the way we have developed; the financial productivity of our places. This stunning presentation is a game-changer for communities looking to grow more resilient and obtain true prosperity during changing times.

What's the big idea?

Three "big ideas" are central to Strong Towns thinking, and Marohn explores them within the Curbside Chat program:

Tactical Urbanism Summit + Projects

      September 15

Eventbrite - Tactical Urbanism Summit + Projects

"Imagining North Adams" events are free, but space is limited.
Please register to ensure that we'll have enough room for everyone.

"Tactical urbanism" describes a wide range of projects that apply inventiveness, community spirit, and an experimental mindset to the shaping of public places.

As one of the "action components" of Imagining North Adams, the Tactical Urbanism Summit will display the wide array of tactical urban projects that are in practice throughout the U.S.A. It will include presentations, projects and networking opportunities that enable participants to share information and discover how short term action can lead to long term change in our cities. In combination with this event, The Street Plans Collaborative will engage participants in local projects, in collaboration with the City of North Adams and local community groups.*

This event is suitable for all ages and backgrounds. Dress for comfort, and bring work gloves if you've got 'em. We look forward to seeing you.

(A detailed schedule will be posted here as sessions and projects are confirmed. Join our mailing list to have news sent directly to your "in" box.)
